5 Ways to Teach Cultural Competence and Diversity in Healthcare
Practical, respectful activities for a topic students need but textbooks barely touch

Cultural competence is one of those topics that shows up in a single textbook paragraph but matters every single day a healthcare worker is on the job. Here are five ways to give it real classroom time — without turning it into a lecture nobody remembers.
1. Start with a real scenario, not a definition. Rather than opening with "what is cultural competence," open with a short patient scenario where a provider misreads a patient's needs due to a cultural misunderstanding. Let students diagnose what went wrong before you name the concept.
2. Use case studies from multiple angles. Give small groups the same patient scenario but assign each group a different cultural or religious consideration to research and apply. Compare answers as a class — the differences are usually the best part of the discussion.
3. Talk about communication styles, not just customs. Cultural competence isn't only about holidays and diet — it's also about eye contact norms, directness versus indirectness, and family involvement in care decisions. These show up in nearly every patient interaction.
4. Bring in real (anonymized) examples if you can. If you or a guest speaker has clinical experience, a real (de-identified) story about a cultural misunderstanding — and how it was resolved — lands harder than any hypothetical.
5. Make it an ongoing thread, not a one-day unit. Revisit cultural competence throughout the year as new units come up — nutrition, mental health, end-of-life care — rather than treating it as a single lesson to check off.
This is a topic your students will carry with them well beyond your classroom. It's worth the extra time.
